Eric Carmen
Make Me Lose Control
by Dawn St John
There are songs from our youth that we have all but forgotten, and a lot of them are best left buried in our memories. Others, though, still hit us just as hard as ever when we hear them. A few weeks ago I was in a convenience store. Barely even aware of what the song was, I found myself humming along with it, and felt a grin creep across my face.
I remember singing along to Eric Carmen's "Make Me Lose Control," in the back seat of my parents' car. I was 13 the year it was released, and my best friend's name happened to be Jennifer. Of course, at only a year older than me, she didn't exactly have access to "her Daddy's car," as the song says, but she did love to sing along with the stereo. And we sang "Stand by Me" in Junior High chorus together.
Really, though, it's just a great song. It's fun to sing along with, it has an upbeat, feel-good sound, and it has the added bonus of nostalgia value. If you have it buried on an old CD somewhere (for me, it's on a compilation of 80's hits - I never actually bought Carmen's album), pull it out and give it a listen. See if it makes you smile, the way it does for me.
